Frequently Asked Questions
1. What makes your food better than others?
Answer: It is the combination of ingredients and quality control at the manufacturing facility that make our food different/better. By looking at the ingredients you will see some that are the same as other foods; such as chicken meal and rice (the first 2 ingredients) but after that you will see some differences like "oatmeal" as the 3rd ingredient. Glucosamine & Chondroitin; our food has among the highest of all the foods on the market in this area. Then there is the Omega 3&6 fatty acids, we have 1% more than most foods of the Omega 6. This may not seem like much but you will see the results in the skin and coat after just a few weeks. Then we have the K-9 Vita-pak; a combination of vitamins unique to our food. The combination of everything makes for well balanced nutrition for your dog or puppy. Compare prices to other foods that have what we have and you be paying $50 - $65 per bag. This makes Breeders Select the best value of all of the Super Premium foods out there.
2. We have a large dog and a small breed dog; can I feed this food to both of them?
Answer: Yes you can. Our food has small kibbles that small dogs can eat and the larger dogs prefer. Also the smaller kibble is more flavorful and cleans the teeth better. The difference between food for large and small breed dogs ifs the glucosamine and chondroitin; joint supplements. Other dog food companies do not see the need for the joint supplements because it cost more to add those ingredients (glucosamine & chondriotin) in their foods. Smaller dogs do not have the joint issues that large dogs have, however, small dogs get old and have stiff, sore joints too, and they get arthritis. We feed the food to our 14 year old 6# Chihuahua and our 8# Brussels Griffon, they love it and do great on the food. Our Chihuahua has arthritis and before we got our food she could barely move in the morning when first getting up, just like people. After eating the food 6-8 weeks the results were unbelievable, she would get up and bounce around like a puppy.
3. How is Breeders Select for dogs with sensitive stomachs?
Answer: Since Oatmeal is a natural fiber (Nature’s Fiber), it soothes the skin and makes for glossy coats. It is one of our top ingredients is excellent for dogs with sensitive stomachs. The food was not formulated for that issue but we have gotten positive results from customers.
4. Can I feed Breeders Select to our dog with allergies?
Answer: There are foods that are specially formulated for dogs with allergies, Breeders Select was not. However, we have had several customers give us positive feedback after using this food for a month. This food has worked where others have not, so you may want to try it and see if your dog feels better.
5. Your adult food has 21% protein and I see many others with much higher levels like 30% - 40%. Isn't the higher protein better?
Answer: Our first formula had 26% protein. Before we went into production we had the formula checked by our veterinarian/nutritionist, so here is the information he gave to us: He advised us to reduce he protein to 21% which is supposed to be the ideal level for adult dogs. The very high protein should be used by working dogs that are working several hours per day. Foods with protein levels too high can cause the liver and kidney to overwork which can cause premature failure. We felt that this is something we did not want to risk, because it is all about the dogs.
6. Breeders Select is a new food to the market, how do we know it really works?
Answer: We are ethical breeders of Doberman Pinschers and one of the largest breeders in the world. We originally got the food made because of the recalls of 2007 when the "premium" dog foods were getting many of their ingredients from China. This food has been tested with all of our dogs, puppies and senior dogs. We have several hundred customers that are using the food and we are always getting positive input from our customers. We originally got the food for our own use and for our puppy customers, then once we saw the outstanding results from our food we decided to make it available to everyone at the best possible price. This has been tested with several hundred dogs all over the country for nearly 3 years and on dogs of all life stages and breeds.
7. What about the “All Life Stage” dog food, is it better?
Answer: There are several foods out there that are “all life stage” foods; which mean that the food is for puppies as well as adults. Let’s look at this logically; children have different nutritional requirements while they are growing and developing (they have children and adult vitamins). One example is they need more milk to help the development of bones. Puppies also have different nutritional requirements; they need more protein for bone and joint development. The people working for the companies that sell “all life stage” dog food will just tell you to feed your puppies more food and feed the adults less; well this just does not work. You can’t force a puppy to eat more! If you don’t feed the adults enough food or food with the proper nutrition they will still be hungry and searching for something to eat; this could create the dreaded “poop eater”.
8. I have heard that some major dog food brands are living on their past reputation, what does that mean?
Answer: There are several major brands of dog food that have been bought out by major companies such as Proctor & Gamble, Colgate Palmolive and Mars. A couple of these foods you will see advertised at major dog shows, I will not mention names, you will know them. These foods had built a good reputation by providing high quality food for your pets. Higher profits thru cost cutting is a major cause for the recalls in 2006 & 2007; ingredients from China. Don't be sucked in by the high dollar advertising budget. Check out the ingredients on the back or side of the bag. Here is one of the keys: chicken by-product meal. This is a trend of some of the major brands as a way of reducing manufacturing costs. I have checked with our manufacturer and there is a considerable savings by using this instead of chicken meal. There are other trends in reducing the cost and quality of the food, check the Guaranteed Analysis: reduced amounts of glucosamine & chondroitin, fewer vitamins, less omega 3&6. We are doing our best to keep the price down, but we refuse to bring the quality down. Our goal is to provide your dog with the proper nutrition and make this super premium food available to more families and pets. Your dog is worth it!
9. What about the Holistic dog food?
Answer: One of the trends has been to “humanize” the food more by putting more ingredients in the food that you and I eat, like fruits and vegetables. Again you need to check out the Guaranteed Analysis on the bag of food and see what you are getting. Is your dog really getting the ingredients to keep him healthy.
A. Usually there are very few vitamins
B. Very few of them have glucosamine & chondroitin, for the joints
C. Seldom will they have the Omegas; 3&6 for the skin & coat.
We have many customers that switch to our food because their dog gets soft stool with the other foods. The people food is not always best for your dog, even though you may like the “human” ingredients. The cost is higher as well.
10. I’m seeing more Organic dog food on the shelves, is this good?
Answer: Organic food is described as: food that is farmed without the use of pesticides, antibiotics or genetically altered organisms. My wife needs to maintain a diet of Organic food because of health issues. I can’t really tell the difference except that is way more expensive. You may have a dog that has similar negative reactions to non-organic foods so you may need to use one of these foods. But again you will be making compromises in other areas of the food; check out the Guaranteed Analysis and compare. If you dog is not having reactions to regular food I would save the money, the organic food will cost you nearly 2 times what our food cost. The choice is yours.
