Breeder's Select™ Large Breed Dog Food Formula Brand Comparisons

We have compared just a few of the popular dog foods with Breeders Select. There are some that just are not in the same class as Breeders Select or some of the foods below that we are using for comparisons. Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet (the basic formulas, the prescription diets are fine) are no longer in the same category as Super Premium dog foods. They have sacrificed quality for profit, their main meat ingredient is “chicken by-product meal”, and this of course is all parts of the chicken: bones, beaks intestines, etc. not including feathers. They have started a campaign by telling people that if you put several parts of the chicken next to the intestines that the dog will eat the intestines first, intestines carry the waste of the dog. Well if you put a Twinkie next to the intestines he will eat the Twinkie first, but you don’t feed your dog Twinkies all the time. Your children will eat Twinkies first but the same thing you don’t feed your children a steady diet of Twinkies.

Here is another trend or marketing gimmick that is happening. As you probably know there is a trend toward “humanizing” the dog foods. That is why you will see the fruits, vegetables, pumpkin pie, cottage cheese, etc. in the ingredients. Let’s think about this for a minute, when you read the ingredients it probably sounds real good and may even make you hungry to the point that you say to yourself “that sounds good, I’ll bet my dog will like it “, not surprising. However is it what your dog really needs to assure that he is getting proper nutrition to promote proper growth, healthy bones & joints? I have yet to find one of these foods that has any Glucosamine & Chondroitin in the food. This helps the development of the joints & cartilage. No it is not required by AAFCO, but it is good for your dog. We have seen the proof of this by having a Chihuahua with arthritis and barely able to walk in the morning. After a few weeks she was bouncing around like a puppy again. Even more important; this can be a preventative measure that can help reduce and/or eliminate future hip and joint problems. Veterinarians & nutritionist will tell you the positive effect these ingredients will have on your dog’s joints. We have many testimonies about dogs that were crippled and could barely get up and walk, and then within weeks they walked only with a slight limp. This may not be a required ingredient BUT IT WORKS! We are one of the only ones to continue using Glucosamine & Chondroitin in our food and we will not cheapen the food by eliminating it like everyone else.

The ingredients are similar to Breeders Select, however the #1 ingredient is deboned chicken (about 70% water). Go to the Guaranteed Analysis and you will see that Breeders Select has higher Omega 3&6 fatty acids; also Blue Buffalo does not have any Glucosamine & chondroitin. Breeders Select has the highest amount of the two supplements of all the foods on the market. This makes Breeders Select the best value dog food on the market.

Innova is a different type of food; note the vegetables in the ingredients. The first 2 ingredients: turkey & chicken are 70% water, and then they have the chicken meal as the 3rd ingredient to get the protein. The bottom line again is to check out the Guaranteed Analysis; Innova is higher in Crude Fat, vitamin C and vitamin E, however, they are lower in Omega 6 and there is no glucosamine & chondroitin for the joints. We strongly believe that this is critical for joint health in all dogs. These shortcomings are typical for foods that have the fruits & vegetables. We have many customers switch to our food because of the soft stools from Innova. We have heard from a nutritionist that Innova is difficult to digest. We have to look at the results of using our food, check out the testimonials, there are a couple from previous Innova customers.

Good formula for Evo and the highest amount of Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids of any food we have seen. It is all wasted because of the super high protein level of 42%. Our veterinarian/nutritionist says that the high protein levels like this will cause the kidney & liver to overwork which could lead to premature failure. This high protein level is for hard working dogs and in the warmer climates that protein may be very difficult to work off. Evo has a very high fat content as well at 22%. This is not a good formula for family dogs for the above reasons. This super high protein level is twice the amount of Breeders Select and makes our dog food the one of choice in this area too.

Bison, lamb meal, chicken meal, egg product, sweet potatoes, peas, potatoes, canola oil, roasted bison, roasted venison, natural flavor, tomato pomace, ocean fish meal, salt, choline chloride, dried chicory root, tomatoes, blueberries, raspberries, yucca schidigera extract, dried fermentation products of Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus plantarum, dried Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation extract, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, niacin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin (vitamin B2), vitamin D supplement, folic acid.

Great ingredients, pretty good amount of omega 3&6, protein much too high for adult dogs (per our veterinarian/nutritionist) and a high fat content. Our protein level is the right percent for adult dogs, our omega 3&6 are higher; THERE IS NO GLUCOSAMINE & CHONDROITIN in the Taste of the Wild, we feature some of the highest amounts of glucosamine & chondroitin of all of the foods on the market. After reviewing 3 formulas of Taste of the wild; two of them have 32% protein, The Pacific Stream has 25% which is much better. The omega 3&6 is a higher percent in Breeders Select than all Taste of the Wild formulas, they do not have glucosamine & chondroitin in any formula. So even though the ingredients are good they have eliminated the joint supplements. This food has good ingredients but does not have one of the critical supplements needed to promote healthy joints and bones. In order to provide your dog with these joint supplements you would have to buy them separately. Taste of the wild is much more expensive than our food, which again makes our food the best value on the market. This is our basic common sense approach to nutrition in order to keep the cost down and enable us to make this super premium food available to more dogs.
